MANILA, Philippines — Filipino folk singer Freddie Aguilar passed away early Tuesday morning at the age of 72. The news was confirmed by lawyer George Briones, general counsel of Partido Federal ng Pilipinas (PFP).

Aguilar died at approximately 1:30 a.m. on May 27, 2025, at the Philippine Heart Center. He is survived by his wife Jovie and their children, who are mourning his loss.

Best known for his iconic song “Anak,” which sold over 33 million copies worldwide, Aguilar’s work has been translated into multiple languages. His other famous piece, “Bayan Ko,” held significant cultural importance in the Philippines.

Aguilar was not only a celebrated musician but also an influential figure in politics. He served as the Presidential Adviser on Culture and the Arts under President Rodrigo Duterte and was a member of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA).
