A Goofy Movie Documentary Team Behind The Scenes

LOS ANGELES, Calif. — As the 30th anniversary of A Goofy Movie approaches, filmmakers Christopher Ninness and Eric Kimelton are set to release their documentary Not Just A Goof on April 7 on Disney+. The film chronicles their journey from initial concept to completion, highlighting their passion for the beloved Disney classic.

Originally, the duo aimed to explore the A Goofy Movie fandom, acknowledging its cult status. “Do people really know this about A Goofy Movie?” Kimelton reflects. “We realized this documentary wasn’t just about fandom; it was for the fandom.” Their vision shifted after a pivotal first interview with the film’s director, Kevin Lima, who shared poignant stories about the creation of A Goofy Movie.

“He opened up in a way we hadn’t anticipated,” Ninness recalled. “It hit us that this was more than just a film about animation; it was about heart and soul.” Lima encouraged them to pursue their project, reminding them that “if you start it, you have to finish it.”

The filmmakers faced numerous challenges, including restrictions during the COVID-19 pandemic that complicated interviews. To overcome limitations in production, they collaborated with Venturia Animation Studios in Colombia for animated sequences, capturing A Goofy Movie’s original style.

“Juan Urbina had a brilliant idea: what if we animated the documentary’s sequences with the characters as dogs?” Kimelton said. This approach successfully added a unique charm to the project. Venturia provided around 10 minutes of animation, agreeing to a profit-sharing deal instead of upfront payment.

In late 2022, the duo received unexpected validation when Donald Glover‘s Emmy-winning show Atlanta aired an episode dedicated to A Goofy Movie. “It reminded us of the cultural relevance of the story we were telling,” Ninness said. Inspired, they continued pouring passion into their project, weaving the score by Cameron Chambers into the fabric of the film. “The music became a character in itself,” Kimelton added.

As their work progressed, Lima encouraged them to include their personal stories in the documentary. “By sharing our stories, maybe it would allow others to see themselves,” Kimelton reflected, highlighting the importance of vulnerability in artistic expression.

In 2024, their film reached Disney producer Don Hahn, who expressed interest in supporting their project. “It was surreal joy,” Ninness recalled. “Disney saw what he saw: something worth sharing.”

The filmmakers emphasized the lengthy process required to bring their documentary to life, noting the significance of teamwork and a shared vision. Despite legal hurdles and unforeseen challenges, their passion fueled persistence.

Ninness and Kimelton encapsulated their experience as a blend of “sheer ignorance” and dedication. “If we had known how many obstacles we would face, we might have given up,” Ninness said. “But sometimes, not knowing is what helps you persevere.”

The documentary, Not Just A Goof, directed by Ninness and Kimelton, will debut on Disney+ on April 7, showcasing the untold story behind A Goofy Movie, celebrating both the film and its enduring impact on fans.
