FINNEAS Releases Sophomore Album “For Cryin’ Out Loud!”
FINNEAS, known widely for his production work with his sister Billie Eilish, has stepped into the limelight with the release of his second album titled “For Cryin’ Out Loud!” As of October 4, 2024, the 10-track album explores themes of family, romance, and self-awareness. FINNEAS, whose real name is Finneas O’Connell, showcases a balance of his lyrical prowess and production skills throughout the album.
The cover art of the album presents a solemn image of FINNEAS seated in a corner, emphasizing a tone of introspection. In an interview regarding the album, FINNEAS explained that the cover shot was an unplanned moment captured during the shooting of a music video. “I don’t know, there’s something kinda cool — she’s clearly looking at me and I’m holding her hand and kinda looking away, which is sort of how you are when you’re tortured by something,” he said.
The album kicks off with “Starf—er,” a song reflecting on a relationship tainted by fame and broken promises. The track begins with haunting piano chords before FINNEAS’ evocative vocals take over, a pattern that recurs throughout the album. Subsequent tracks like “What’s It Gonna Take To Break Your Heart?” and “Cleats” adopt a more upbeat rhythm but maintain emotional depth.
“Little Window,” characterized by acoustic guitars and a softer tone, contrasts with preceding tracks. Here, FINNEAS critiques society’s reliance on social media through the metaphor of a “little window.” His lyrics, “Tears in your eyes/ Brush them aside/ And have a nice day,” capture the superficiality often observed in digital interactions.
Midway through the album, “2001” attempts to weave a textured soundscape, yet critics have noted it lacks distinction due to repetitive elements. Alternatively, “Same Old Story” offers a poignant piano ballad, with FINNEAS’ lyrics exposing emotional vulnerabilities and reflections on past relationships.
Among the standout tracks, “Sweet Cherries” demonstrates FINNEAS’ keen production skill, marked by its dynamic sound shifts and a compelling groove in its latter half. The album’s titular track, “For Cryin’ Out Loud!,” functions effectively as its lead single with a catchy, pop-influenced beat.
Another significant track, “Family Feud,” dives into the emotional toll of fame on familial relationships. FINNEAS articulates his concern for Eilish through the line, “And you’re only twenty-two/ And there’s nothin’ I can do/ I made mistakes, you’ll make ‘em too.” This track resonates deeply, reflecting the pressures both siblings face within the public eye.
The album concludes with “Lotus Eater,” a song exploring themes of escapism while leaving underlying issues unaddressed. “For Cryin’ Out Loud!” signals FINNEAS’ growth as a solo artist, showcasing his ability to navigate personal and universal themes through music.
