First Trailer for ‘Wicked: For Good’ Sparks Excitement Among Fans

WASHINGTON — The first official trailer for “Wicked: For Good” has been released, thrilling fans of the beloved musical. Directed by Jon M. Chu, the sequel to the hit film “Wicked” features Cynthia Erivo returning as Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, and Ariana Grande as Glinda, the Good Witch of the North.
The new film picks up the story after Elphaba and Glinda’s decision to part ways, highlighting Elphaba’s transformation into an enemy of Oz while Glinda rises to public prominence.
This trailer offers glimpses of their intertwined destinies. One notable scene depicts Glinda cracking her bedroom window before stepping out onto her balcony to call for Elphaba, who emerges from the shadows.
The trailer hints at the introduction of Dorothy, who can be seen walking down the yellow brick road with her companions, suggesting she will play a significant role in the film. However, the casting for Dorothy remains unannounced.
A standout moment includes Elphaba writing “Our wizard lies” in the clouds, showcasing her bold defiance amid rising tensions, as an angry mob searches for her. Another scene reveals Glinda sending Elphaba a handwritten note expressing her heartfelt wishes.
Jon M. Chu shared insights on the storyline, stating, “Our heart was broken when Glinda can’t make the choice that we want her to so badly at the end of movie one, and it feels empowering for Elphaba to fly away from society. In movie two, we get to see the consequences of those choices. The temperature is up.”
The sequel, set to release on November 21, will feature musical highlights from the second act of the Broadway show, alongside two new songs crafted to help narrate the evolving story.
Grande’s Glinda is shown in a wedding dress in the trailer, hinting at her upcoming marriage to Fiyero, portrayed by Jonathan Bailey, echoing themes of love and change. Meanwhile, Jeff Goldblum returns as the Wizard, demanding Elphaba’s broom from Dorothy and her friends.
In a poignant exchange, Elphaba tells Glinda, “You’re the only friend I’ve ever had,” to which Glinda responds, “But only one that mattered.” The emotional connection between the characters remains a focal point, setting the stage for a dramatic continuation of their story.
With a budget of $165 million, “Wicked: For Good” aims to capture the essence of the Broadway phenomenon while presenting new elements for both fans and newcomers to enjoy.
