Former ANC MP Joins Umkhonto We Sizwe Party Amid Accusations
Ponani Makhubele, a former member of parliament for the African National Congress (ANC), has formally announced her resignation from the ANC, citing dissatisfaction and safety concerns. Makhubele has since joined the Umkhonto We Sizwe Party, a move that highlights growing tensions within the ANC party ranks.
Makhubele was affiliated with the ANC’s Bongi Mabunda branch in Giyani. In her statement, Makhubele expressed her apprehension regarding the direction of the ANC, asserting that the party no longer reflects its proclaimed values. “The ANC is not what it says it is,” Makhubele stated, adding that she feels isolated and concerned about her personal safety due to internal opposition.
Earlier this year, Makhubele accused the ANC of manipulating its national election list, claiming her name was improperly moved on the national-to-national list. This action, she alleged, is part of a long-standing practice within the party. Despite considering legal action, Makhubele ultimately decided not to pursue court proceedings, citing the party’s apparent reluctance to engage in meaningful renewal processes and lack of accountability mechanisms.
Explaining her decision to join the Umkhonto We Sizwe Party, Makhubele emphasized the party’s alignment with her ideals, particularly its commitment to the liberation of the people and advancing inclusive socio-economic development in South Africa. “The MK Party speaks the same language as the ANC,” she remarked, underscoring her hopes for both political integrity and reform.
