Former Ondo First Lady, Betty Akeredolu Reintegrated into Akeredolu Family After Late Governor’s Passing
The widow of the late former Governor of Ondo State, Mrs. Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu, has been formally reintegrated into the Akeredolu family following the passing of her husband, Rotimi Akeredolu. The decision was made by the Emeabiam Community in Owerri West Local Government Area of Imo State, and she was handed over to her late husband’s younger brother, Professor Wole Akeredolu.
Rotimi Akeredolu, who sadly passed away in December 2023 after a battle with cancer, was succeeded by his deputy, Lucky Ayedatiwa, and was laid to rest in February 2024. In continuation of the mourning period and traditions, the traditional Mgbafu Mkpe ceremony for Betty took place on Sunday, March 31, 2024, in Owerri West Local Government Area.
The ceremony culminated with the Umuegeolu kindred officially handing Betty over to Professor Wole Akeredolu, indicating the continued acceptance of her within the Akeredolu family. Traditional offerings of kolanuts, palm wine, and a she-goat were presented to the Umuegeolu kindred by the Akeredolus, in adherence to customary practices.
Expressing gratitude, Professor Wole Akeredolu thanked the Umuegeolu kindred and the entire Emeabiam Community for their support and hospitality. He emphasized the family’s dedication to caring for Betty following her husband’s passing and during the mourning and burial ceremonies held in Owo.
Donning a black gown with white stripes and dark sunglasses as a symbol of mourning, former first lady Betty remained silent throughout the proceedings. Among the attendees were members of the Umuegeolu family, Nde Mgboto Emeabiam (Daughters of the soil), and Oha n’Ikoro Emeabiam (Elders Council).
The Mgbafu Mkpe ceremony, rooted in Igbo tradition, marks the transition of a widow back to her husband’s family after his demise. It involves mutual agreement between the families and the performance of customary rituals to signify this reintegration.
