Terry Luttrell Car Crash Reo Speedwagon

Champaign-Urbana, Ill. – Former REO Speedwagon lead vocalist Terry Luttrell was injured in a car crash on Sunday morning after falling asleep at the wheel.

The 78-year-old singer was driving home after the band’s farewell concert at State Farm Center on Saturday night when he wrecked his car on the interstate. The reunion concert featured current and former members of the band, except for current lead singer Kevin Cronin, who missed the event due to prior commitments.

“I was able to get up and get out of the car,” Luttrell told reporters. “The airbag went off and cracked my sternum a little bit.” He mentioned experiencing some back and neck pain but stated, “It’s nothing that can’t be overcome.”

Luttrell said he was heading to St. Louis for business after a late night of signing fan autographs until 2 a.m. He admitted to not sleeping until 4:30 a.m. and nodded off behind the wheel just a few hours later.

According to Luttrell, the keyboard player from his REO Classics band was traveling behind him when the accident occurred. After rolling his car, he found himself “in a cocoon,” referring to the airbags that deployed during the crash.

He was taken to Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana, where he is recuperating. Unfortunately, he reported that his car was “totaled.”
