Gary Cohn Reflects on Economic Policies at Forum

ARLINGTON, Va. — Gary Cohn, former chief economic adviser to President Donald Trump, offered his insights on economic policy during an interview at the Reagan National Economic Forum on June 5, 2025. Known for his unexpected role as a registered Democrat in a Republican administration, Cohn reflected on his tenure and its lasting impact.
Cohn, who played a pivotal role in shaping the 2017 tax cuts, discussed the recent proposals dubbed the “Liberation Day” tariffs. These tariffs mark a shift towards more aggressive trade policies, which Cohn acknowledged could provoke significant reactions in the current economic climate.
“The landscape has changed considerably, and while tariffs can protect domestic industries, they also risk escalating trade tensions,” Cohn stated during his conversation with hosts Mike Bird and Alice Fulwood.
The forum included discussions around the “Big Beautiful Bill,” which aims to make Cohn’s tax cuts permanent. This initiative highlights the ongoing debate among lawmakers about the sustainability and effectiveness of such tax policies.
Cohn, also known for his prior role as president of Goldman Sachs, emphasized the importance of balancing economic growth with potential risks associated with new tariffs. “It’s about finding that balance to foster growth without jeopardizing international relations,” he added.
The conversation also touched upon recent developments in Alzheimer’s drug advancements and shifting trends in popular music, showcasing a variety of topics that are relevant to today’s economic and cultural landscape.
