London, U.K. – Gary Oldman recently opened up about his regrets while filming the 1995 adaptation of Nathaniel Hawthorne‘s classic novel, The Scarlet Letter. In an interview with Radio Times, the 67-year-old actor revealed that he had to apologize to co-star Demi Moore for his unprofessional behavior during the shoot.

At the time, Oldman was struggling with alcohol abuse, admitting he was in a ‘very dark place.’ He recalled having ‘intermittent bouts of boozing’ while filming and described how one afternoon of drinking affected his performance. ‘I got back on the set to do quite a big scene, and while I got through it, you wouldn’t really know but I was quite tipsy,’ he said.

After the filming, he expressed his remorse to Moore, saying, ‘I’m so sorry, you must hate me.’ He mentioned feeling mortified for how his behavior might have impacted their collaboration. Moore responded, ‘I don’t hate you. It’s OK. I’m just disappointed,’ according to Oldman.

Oldman’s struggles with alcohol were significant, impacting not just his career but also his relationships. He indicated that the incident occurred during the latter part of his drinking days, which ultimately led him to seek help and achieve sobriety around 28 years ago. Moore has also spoken publicly about her past struggles with alcohol, detailing her journey to sobriety in her memoir, Inside Out.
