Gas Prices Drop Ahead of Busy Holiday Weekend in North Carolina

RALEIGH, N.C. — Travelers hitting the roads this holiday weekend will benefit from falling gas prices, particularly in North Carolina, where costs are significantly below the national average. As of April 18, 2025, nationwide gas prices stand at approximately $3.16 a gallon, reflecting a 50-cent decrease compared to last year.
In North Carolina, the average price is $2.85 per gallon, while motorists in Raleigh can find prices around $2.90, with some stations offering gas as low as $2.62 per gallon. Mississippi and Tennessee currently feature the lowest prices in the U.S., with averages at $2.70 a gallon, according to the American Automobile Association (AAA).
Lower prices have been attributed to ongoing trade war discussions that are pushing global oil prices down. Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, explains, “There’s a lot of uncertainty surrounding exactly what U.S. trade policy will look like this summer. Gas prices will largely reflect whatever the policy is — whether it involves tariffs that could lower prices or a pause that could actually raise prices.”
As travelers enjoy lower prices, AAA urges caution on the roads during the holiday weekend. The organization reminds drivers to be vigilant of potential increases in impaired drivers and advises against drinking and driving.
“It’s not just about getting to your destination; it’s about getting there safely,” said AAA spokesperson Morgan Dean. “Plan ahead, and if you do consume alcohol, let someone else take the wheel.”
