Gauteng Provincial Government Joins Hands with Independent Power Producers for Solar Farm Development
In a significant development, the Gauteng Provincial Government (GPG) has entered into agreements with two Independent Power Producers (IPPs) to lead the establishment of a solar farm in the Merafong Local Municipality.
This initiative, which was first revealed by Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi during the State of the Province Address in February 2024, is aimed at enhancing the region’s energy infrastructure.
The solar farm will occupy 1600 hectares of land donated by Sibanye Stillwater and will host a photovoltaic power station capable of generating 800 megawatts once completed, providing a substantial power boost to the grid.
Managed as a Public Private Partnership (PPP) under a Non-Profit Company (NPC) named Bokamoso Ba Rona, the project involves key partners such as the Far West Rand Dolomitic Water Association (FWRDWA), Sibanye Stillwater, West Rand District Municipality, and the Gauteng Infrastructure Financial Agency (GIFA) representing GPG.
The IPPs taking part in the project are responsible for sourcing their own funding and securing all essential permits for the site development, ensuring that the project’s progress does not place a financial burden on the provincial government.
Jacob Mamabolo, the MEC for Finance, praised the initiative as a promising model for rejuvenating economically challenged regions, highlighting the role of Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs) in driving meaningful change even in times of financial constraints.
