Georgia Power Energy Storage Project

ATLANTA, Sept. 23, 2025 — Georgia Power has issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) seeking 500 megawatts (MW) of energy storage capacity. The utility aims to have the systems operational by the end of 2031 as part of its strategy to enhance grid reliability with energy storage technologies.

The Georgia Public Service Commission (PSC) approved the RFP, which is a component of Georgia Power’s integrated resource plan from 2022. The utility will consider both standalone energy storage systems and those paired with renewable energy resources.

Georgia Power stated that the selected projects must have a discharge duration of at least two hours. Preference will be given to proposals that can be activated by November 28, 2031, maximizing the program’s impact on energy reliability.

To facilitate this initiative, independent evaluator Ascend Analytics will oversee the RFP process. A bidder’s conference is scheduled for September 29, 2025, to provide potential participants with further details and guidance.

Georgia Power’s previous investment in energy storage includes the 65-MW Mossy Branch Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), which commenced operations in November 2024. An additional 765 MW project has been authorized and is expected to come online in 2026.

“Battery storage will continue to play a critical role in the power grid of the future,” Georgia Power said in a statement. The utility emphasized that energy storage improves reliability and supports sustainability efforts in the region.

The RFP process will ensure that proposals connect to the Southern Co. transmission system, which is the parent company of Georgia Power. Interested bidders are instructed not to submit projects located on Georgia Power property unless they are company-owned proposals.

As the clean energy landscape evolves, this RFP marks a significant step forward in Georgia Power’s commitment to delivering safe, clean, and affordable energy to its 2.8 million customers.
