Gerard Butler’s ‘Den of Thieves 2: Pantera’ Nears $35 Million at Global Box Office

LOS ANGELES, Calif. — Gerard Butler‘s latest action thriller, Den of Thieves 2: Pantera, has grossed $35 million globally since its January 10 release, with $28.4 million coming from domestic box office earnings. The sequel, directed by Christian Gudegast, follows Butler’s character, Sheriff “Big Nick” O’Brien, as he teams up with O’Shea Jackson Jr.’s Donnie Wilson for a high-stakes diamond heist across Europe.
The film opened strong, earning $15 million in its debut weekend and securing the top spot at the box office. However, it experienced a 56% drop in its second weekend, falling to fifth place with $6.5 million. Despite the decline, the movie has maintained steady earnings, adding nearly $500,000 on January 22 alone.
Den of Thieves 2: Pantera has outperformed its 2018 predecessor in critical reception, scoring 61% on Rotten Tomatoes compared to the original’s 41%. Audience scores also improved, with the sequel earning a 79% Popcornmeter score versus the original’s 63%.
The film’s success comes amid a challenging period for the box office, with January traditionally being a slow month for movie releases. The COVID-19 pandemic and the rise of streaming platforms like Netflix and Prime Video have further complicated the theatrical landscape. However, Butler’s sequel has managed to hold its ground, appealing to fans of the franchise and action-thriller enthusiasts.
Butler, who also produced the film, has a busy year ahead. He is set to reprise his role in Greenland: Migration, a sequel to the 2020 disaster thriller, and will star in the comedy All-Star Weekend, directed by Jamie Foxx. With three films slated for release in 2025, Butler continues to solidify his status as a leading figure in action cinema.
While Den of Thieves 2: Pantera faces competition from upcoming blockbusters like Mickey 17 and Sonic the Hedgehog 3, its strong performance in a slow market suggests potential for long-term success, particularly when it transitions to streaming platforms.
