LOS ANGELES, California — Gerard Butler‘s survival thriller Plane, released in theaters in January 2023, has soared to the top of the charts since its premiere on Peacock, grossing $74 million globally against a $25 million budget. The film, which also stars Mike Colter, follows pilot Brodie Torrance, played by Butler, who must land his commercial jet in a war zone due to a severe storm.

Since its debut on Peacock, Plane quickly claimed the #1 spot on the platform’s movie charts. However, competition is imminent as another high-profile release is set to debut this week, raising questions about how long the film will maintain its top position.

Plane is a gripping action film that resonates with audiences, and its streaming success is a testament to that,” said a Peacock spokesperson. “We’re excited to have it as part of our lineup.”

The movie, directed by Jean-François Richet, revolves around Torrance’s harrowing attempt to save his passengers, including convict Louis Gaspare, portrayed by Colter, who turns out to be pivotal for their survival in this life-and-death scenario.

Despite its success on streaming, Plane‘s sequel has faced delays. A follow-up, tentatively titled Ship, is in the works, with Colter expected to return. Initial production news had slowed due to various factors, but there are indications that the project is still active.

Richet, who directed the original film, is also slated to helm the sequel. However, the involvement of writers Charles Cumming and J.P. Davis remains uncertain.

In the meantime, other films are also finding strong viewership on Peacock. The Twilight series, including Breaking Dawn: Parts 1 and 2, New Moon, and Eclipse, have been dominating the platform’s charts alongside Plane.

As streaming competition heats up, Butler is not only involved with Plane. His sequel to Den of Thieves, titled Den of Thieves 2: Pantera, has also entered the streaming realm but has not performed as well theatrically.

Overall, Butler continues to be a significant presence on both streaming platforms and in theaters, indicating his sustained relevance in the entertainment industry. The immediate future for Plane and its sequel will be closely watched as more releases enter the streaming fray.
