Australian cricketer Glenn Maxwell made a significant statement in the T20I cricket arena by surpassing New Zealand’s Kane Williamson to secure the 10th spot in the list of highest run-scorers during a thrilling encounter at the ICC T20 World Cup Super Eights in Kingstown, Saint Vincent.

Maxwell’s exceptional performance came against a spirited Afghanistan side, where he showcased his prowess with a crucial knock of 59 runs off 41 deliveries, comprising six boundaries and three towering sixes, at a brisk strike rate of 143.90.

Despite Maxwell’s valiant efforts, Australia fell short in their pursuit of 149 runs, as the middle-order collapse proved to be their downfall in the match.

In terms of overall tournament statistics, Maxwell has accumulated 112 runs in six matches at an average of 28.00, maintaining a healthy strike rate of 138.27 with a high score of 59.

With this feat, Maxwell’s T20I career tally now stands at 2,580 runs in 112 matches, boasting an average of 30.00 and an impressive strike rate of 154.67, including five centuries and 11 half-centuries, setting him apart as a dynamic all-rounder.

On the contrary, Williamson, a stalwart of New Zealand cricket, holds a record of 2,575 runs in the T20I format, averaging 33.44 with a strike rate of 123.08, and boasting 18 half-centuries in his illustrious career.

The highest run-scorers in T20I cricket remain Babar Azam of Pakistan, accompanied by the renowned duo of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma from India.

Reflecting on the match, Australia’s decision to bowl first saw Afghanistan amass 148/6, courtesy of an impressive partnership between Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran, though the Australian bowlers, spearheaded by Pat Cummins and Adam Zampa, restricted the opposition’s total.

Afghanistan’s bowlers, particularly Naveen ul Haq and Gulbadin, posed a challenge for the Australian batting lineup, leading to their eventual dismissal for 127 runs in 19.2 overs, marking Afghanistan’s maiden victory over Australia in international cricket.

Notable performances from Naib earned him the ‘Player of the Match’ title, showcasing his prowess with crucial wickets of Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis, Tim David, and Cummins.

With Afghanistan and Australia now positioned at third and second place, respectively, in Group 1 of the Super Eights stage, the upcoming fixtures hold immense significance, especially for India and Bangladesh in determining the advancing teams in the T20 World Cup.
