Gophers Women’s Hockey Shuts Out UMD; Volleyball Tops Indiana
DULUTH, Minn. — The University of Minnesota’s women’s hockey team secured a decisive win against Minnesota Duluth, while the volleyball team celebrated a significant victory over Indiana in separate matches on Friday.
The Gophers women’s hockey team, ranked No. 3, defeated the No. 4 Bulldogs 4-0, extending their current unbeaten streak against Duluth to 14 games. Ava Lindsey played a crucial role, scoring two goals in the second period. “She continues to play the right way and I’m happy to see her get rewarded,” said Gophers coach Brad Frost about Lindsey, who had one goal and a Division I-leading 12 assists entering the game.
After a scoreless first period, Lindsey netted the first goal just 46 seconds into the second period. Madison Kaiser added another goal shortly after, giving the Gophers a comfortable lead. Bulldogs goalie Eve Gascon left the game after appearing injured, and Gophers goalie Hannah Clark tallied 24 saves. Minnesota outshot Duluth 36-24.
On the volleyball court, the No. 20 Gophers claimed a 3-1 victory over 23rd-ranked Indiana, marking their first win against a ranked opponent this season. Julia Hanson led the Gophers with 17 kills, hitting .441. The Gophers hit .412 as a team, their second-highest percentage of the season.
“A great start, first and foremost,” remarked Gophers coach when discussing the team’s performance against Indiana. Kelly Kinney and Carly Gilk contributed significantly, with 15 and 12 kills respectively. The win marks the Gophers’ 15th consecutive victory over the Hoosiers.
The Gophers women’s hockey team will face Duluth again Saturday night as both teams look to improve their standings in the WCHA.
