Grey's Anatomy Teddy Owen Marriage Episode

LOS ANGELES, CA — In a dramatic turn for season 22 of ABC’s long-running medical drama, “Grey's Anatomy,” the latest episode titled “Don’t You (Forget About Me)” explores the complexities of open marriage through the characters Teddy Altman and Owen Hunt.

As the chief of surgery at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital, Teddy faces intense pressure in both her professional and personal life. The core of this storyline revolves around her marriage to fellow trauma surgeon Owen, played by Kevin McKidd. On Thursday’s episode, the couple ventures into unknown territory as they decide to experiment with an open marriage to reignite their strained relationship.

The episode showcases new romantic interests for both characters, particularly for Teddy, who impulsively flirts with Dr. Cass Beckman at a medical conference. In a pivotal scene, Teddy attempts to act on her attraction but ultimately decides against it, realizing that sex won’t solve her marital issues. In a shocking twist, viewers learn that Owen has already taken a different route, finding intimacy with childhood friend Nora (Floriana Lima).

“What an interesting thing to have these two characters [Teddy and Owen] who love each other so much try to find their way,” said Kim Raver, who directs the episode and plays Teddy. “But now, the match is lit. I really wanted it to be that quintessential Grey’s moment where people are throwing popcorn at the end of the episode.”

Raver elaborates on the deeper themes explored in this episode, saying, “Grey’s has never shied away from subjects that people don’t want to talk about,” emphasizing that the show aims to portray both sides of the marriage debate, showcasing varying opinions on open relationships.

The storyline unfolds carefully through therapy and discussions between Teddy and Owen. Raver insisted on ensuring that their decision was consensual, highlighting Teddy’s past mistakes in her relationships to provide growth for her character. “An open marriage isn’t going to fix my marriage,” Teddy poignantly states, indicating her realization and the internal struggle both characters are experiencing.

To handle the sensitive nature of their interactions, the team implemented an intimacy coordinator for the scenes involving Teddy and Cass. Raver noted the importance of creating a safe environment on set for all parties involved. “I was really adamant that it be a consensual thing between Teddy and Owen,” she explained, prioritizing open communication during filming.

As the season progresses, Raver hints that the storyline will become more complicated. “It definitely gets more complicated,” she stated when asked about the future dynamics between the characters.

For Raver, who is deeply passionate about her role and the stories she helps tell, the opportunity to direct was significant. “It’s a gift to tell the story of Teddy throughout time,” she expressed when considering her future with the show. Raver’s enthusiasm for her character’s journey shows her investment in portraying the complexities of both her character and the overarching narratives being explored.

Viewers can expect the season’s finale to deliver the classic cliffhanger moments that “Grey’s Anatomy” is known for. Raver suggested that the finale will keep fans on the edge of their seats, echoing the show’s enduring ability to engage its audience through bold storytelling.

“I think you are worried about everyone in the finale,” Raver teased. “That’s all I’ll say! It’s quintessential Grey’s.”

“Grey’s Anatomy” continues to tackle groundbreaking themes each week, maintaining its relevance and connection with audiences. New episodes air Thursdays at 10 p.m. on ABC and are available for streaming the following day on Hulu.
