Halloween Spending Surges Amid Rising Prices and Costume Trends
WASHINGTON — Spooky season has arrived, with Halloween displays and costumes in stores since summer. Families feel the rush to shop, driven by burgeoning festivities. According to a recent report from the National Retail Federation, Americans will spend about $114 each this year, totaling a record $13.1 billion on Halloween-related sales.
Of this spending, $4.3 billion will go toward costumes, making them one of the largest expenses for the holiday. However, rising prices threaten to impact consumer choices. Tariffs on some imports, particularly costumes made in China, could raise costs significantly. Consumer savings expert Andrea Warrock suggests thrifting as a viable option, recommending local online marketplaces such as Facebook Marketplace and eBay for gently used items.
“Buying used really makes sense if you’re looking for ways to save,” Warrock said. She also encourages families to consider costume swap parties or community buy-nothing groups where neighbors can exchange items for free.
Halloween décor represents another large portion of the budget, with projected spending reaching $4.2 billion this year. Warrock advises that discount stores like HomeGoods or TJ Maxx might provide the most attractive deals for those seeking new ornaments that can last for several years.
And let’s not forget the candy! The NRF estimates that about $3.9 billion will be spent on Halloween treats. Yet, candy prices have surged by 8.1% compared to last year, pushing consumers to find ways to stretch their budgets. Buying in bulk, especially from warehouse clubs, can lead to savings. Moreover, savvy shoppers can browse weekly ads from grocery stores to capitalize on candy sales leading up to Halloween, or wait until Halloween day when treats are often discounted.
To offer a timely reminder: for budget-conscious shoppers, procrastination can lead to savings as candy prices fall closer to the day itself. Conclusively, families gearing up for Halloween can prepare for a blend of festivities while keeping a close eye on their budgets throughout this year’s spooky season.
