Hamilton Urges McLaren Drivers to Be ‘Cut-Throat’ Against Verstappen
Mexico City, Mexico — With the 2025 Formula One championship nearing its climactic finish, seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton has advised McLaren drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri to adopt a more ‘cut-throat’ approach to fend off the fierce competition from reigning champion Max Verstappen.
The 2025 season began with McLaren in a commanding position, boasting a large points lead with Piastri and Norris vying for the driver’s title. However, after a disappointing stretch where Verstappen appeared to be out of contention, he has dramatically closed the gap, winning three of the last five races and cutting Piastri’s lead to just 40 points.
As the Mexican Grand Prix approaches, Hamilton emphasizes the importance of mental focus. “The pressure is high,” he said. “You need to put your blinkers on and block everything from the outside. There’s so much coming in, positive and negative.” Hamilton, who battled Verstappen for the championship in 2021, warns that the McLaren duo must match Verstappen’s aggressive style to maintain their lead.
Hamilton’s caution comes after a tumultuous few weeks for McLaren, marked by clashes between teammates and strategizing issues. “You have to be cut-throat. That’s what Max is,” Hamilton said. He stressed that both McLaren drivers need to push their limits to hold off Verstappen’s resurgence.
Hamilton also pointed out that consistency is key, noting how Verstappen has excelled in recent races. “For either of them to come out ahead, consistency is key,” he added. This weekend’s race could be crucial as the points are still up for grabs, with 141 points remaining over the last five races of the season.
Piastri, who is feeling the pressure after a summer break lead, remains confident. “I’d still rather be where I am than the other two,” he stated. Despite his recent struggles, he believes that he can turn around his performance and clinch the championship title.
As the competition heats up, Hamilton’s insights highlight the mounting pressure facing the McLaren teammates and the urgent need for them to adapt their strategies against a fiercely competitive Verstappen.
