HBO’s ‘The Last of Us’ Season 2 Set for April Premiere
HBO‘s critically acclaimed drama ‘The Last of Us’ will return for its second season in April 2025, Sony announced Monday during its presentation at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. The news was confirmed by Neil Druckmann, studio head and creative director at Naughty Dog, the studio behind the original video game.
Druckmann unveiled a brief teaser for the upcoming season, offering fans a glimpse of Pedro Pascal as Joel Miller and Bella Ramsey as Ellie Williams, along with other key characters. The first season, which premiered in early 2023, was widely praised for its storytelling and faithful adaptation of the beloved video game.
Season 2 is expected to cover a portion of the events from ‘The Last of Us Part II,’ the second installment in the video game series. Showrunner Craig Mazin previously hinted that the story might span multiple seasons, ensuring a thorough exploration of the narrative. ‘We don’t think that we’re going to be able to tell the story even within two seasons [2 and 3] because we’re taking our time and going down interesting pathways,’ Mazin told Deadline.
In addition to the ‘The Last of Us’ announcement, Sony revealed plans to adapt other popular PlayStation titles for film and television. Among the projects is a movie adaptation of ‘Horizon Zero Dawn,’ a collaboration between Columbia Pictures and Sony PlayStation. The game had previously been in development as a Netflix series. Details about the film remain scarce, but PlayStation Productions chief Asad Qizilbash confirmed the collaboration.
Other PlayStation titles set for adaptation include ‘Ghost of Tsushima,’ which will be turned into an anime series, and ‘Helldivers 2,’ which is also in development for the screen. These announcements underscore Sony’s commitment to expanding its gaming franchises into broader entertainment mediums.
The return of ‘The Last of Us’ comes after a two-year hiatus, with fans eagerly anticipating the next chapter in Joel and Ellie’s journey. The first season’s success has set high expectations for the upcoming season, which promises to delve deeper into the post-apocalyptic world and its complex characters.
