Handmaid's Tale Season 6 Episode 9

LOS ANGELES, CA — In the penultimate episode of “The Handmaid’s TaleSeason 6, fans witnessed the tragic deaths of Commander Nick Blaine, played by Max Minghella, and Commander Joseph Lawrence, portrayed by Bradley Whitford. Showrunners Eric Tuchman and Yahlin Chang discussed the emotional weight of these moments during an interview with TheWrap.

Tuchman explained that for Nick, this was the conclusion of his journey. “It felt like the end of his story,” he said. “This was a guy who was trying to straddle two worlds, and he ultimately had to make a decision.” In a pivotal moment, Nick hesitates at the top of a staircase, contemplating whether to board a plane that could lead to a better life.

“He has an opportunity to turn around and say, ‘You know what, I’m going to call Mark Tuello and see if I can still get me, Rose, and my unborn child out,’” Tuchman continued. But ultimately, Nick decides against this option.

Meanwhile, Whitford reflected on Lawrence’s character arc, calling his actions “reckless” and hinting at “insufficient redemption.” Fans are left to ponder the consequences of these choices as the series approaches its finale.
