Heat Warning Issued for Sudbury as Humid Weather Approaches

Published

on

As the temperature continues to rise, Environment and Climate Change Canada has put out a heat warning for the Sudbury area starting Wednesday, July 31, 2024.

This warning kicks in when the temperature is expected to hit 29 degrees Celsius or higher during the day and stay above 18 degrees Celsius at night, or if the humidex hits 36 or more.

Staying in the heat for too long can lead to dehydration and serious health issues like heat stroke, heat exhaustion, and even heat cramps. Those most at risk include older adults, infants and young children, pregnant women, and folks with chronic health problems.

Burgess Hawkins, a manager with Public Health Sudbury & Districts, stresses that while some people are more vulnerable, anyone can fall victim to heat-related issues. Therefore, it’s important for everyone to take precautions.

So, what can you do to keep cool? First, it’s essential to recognize the signs of heat-related illness such as dizziness, nausea, rapid heartbeat, and extreme thirst. If you or someone around you experiences these symptoms, seek help right away. In a serious situation, don’t hesitate to call 911.
