Heat Wave Midwest East Coast Summer 2023

Boston, MA — Millions of people across the Midwest and East Coast are faced with dangerously high temperatures as the region experiences its first major heat wave of the summer. The heat advisory is expected to last through midweek, with some areas facing extreme temperatures until Friday.

On Tuesday, several locations shattered daily temperature records, reaching triple digits. Early summer heat can be particularly hazardous, as many individuals’ bodies have not adjusted to such extreme conditions. Emergency rooms are seeing an increase in heat-related complications, including heat stroke.

To stay safe during the heat wave, experts recommend keeping homes cool. Although most people rely on air conditioning, some may hesitate to use it heavily due to concerns about energy consumption. To help mitigate heat within the home, residents are advised to keep window blinds and curtains closed, reducing the sun’s impact.

“Avoid cooking indoors when possible,” suggests Dr. Kircher, an assistant professor at Purdue University. He emphasizes the importance of drinking water frequently and wearing a brimmed hat when outdoors. Maintaining clean air conditioning filters is also crucial. If air conditioning fails to keep up, he encourages seeking out public spaces, like libraries, known to function as cooling centers.

Climate scientists attribute the intense heat waves to human-caused global warming, primarily due to fossil fuel emissions. To combat this, they advocate for renewable energy solutions, such as wind and solar power coupled with battery storage.

Home comfort expert “the House Whisperer” Adams advises homeowners to seal leaks where hot air can enter. “Look into areas like the attic and basement for potential leaks,” he stated. New strategies such as installing reflective materials can also prevent excessive heat from sunlight.
