Herbert and Pompeo Discuss Trade at Utah Summit

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah — Former Utah Governor Gary Herbert and former CIA Director Mike Pompeo spoke at the Crossroads of the World International Trade Summit on Wednesday, addressing key issues related to trade and immigration.
The invite-only summit, hosted by Zions Bank and the World Trade Center Utah, brought together leaders from various countries to discuss international trade and current tariff negotiations involving the Trump administration.
Pompeo, who supports President Donald Trump, expressed concerns about the unclear strategic objectives of the tariffs put in place, which affect many major economies.
“President Trump hasn’t been clear about his overall strategic objective here,” Pompeo stated, highlighting the anxiety around ongoing trade tensions.
Herbert remarked on Utah’s capability to manage trade obstacles at the state level while acknowledging the resultant uncertainty for businesses.
He also noted divisions within the Republican Party regarding trade. “There are many in the GOP who support Trump but disagree with some of his economic policies,” he said.
The discussion touched on global powers, including Israel and China, and U.S. immigration policy. Herbert criticized Congress for prioritizing re-election over solving critical issues.
“Unfortunately, we have too many in Congress setting aside solving a problem as a top priority to getting re-elected,” Herbert explained.
On immigration, Herbert called for a balanced approach, stating, “We need a working door for legal entry after securing the border.” He reinforced Utah’s welcoming image, mentioning principles for humane immigration.
When asked about Utah’s status as a sanctuary state, Herbert confirmed, “Utah is not a sanctuary state.”
Lastly, he highlighted efforts in research and technology, particularly the work of organizations focused on artificial intelligence in local businesses.
