Historic Home Orient New York For Sale

ORIENT, N.Y. — A 309-year-old historic home known as The Petty Homestead is on the market for $1.2 million, with an annual tax bill of $6,032. The home showcases architectural features from its original construction in 1716, making it one of the oldest residences in the area.

The Petty Homestead, purchased by Daniel Petty and Mehetable King in 1828, has remained in the Petty family for generations. The property is listed on the Southold Town Register of Historic Landmarks and is also part of the National Register of Historic Places. Listing agent Janet Markarian, from Daniel Gale Sotheby’s International Realty, emphasized its significance in the area’s history.

“It is one of the oldest houses in Orient,” Markarian said. “A lot of early houses were built by shipwrights, and The Petty Homestead features a design reminiscent of a ship. You will find exposed beams joined without nails throughout the property.”

The home spans 1,535 square feet and includes three bedrooms and two bathrooms. Some of its original details, like hardwood flooring and a wood-burning stove in the living room, are still intact. The listing highlights that living in such a historic property requires dedication.

<p“Most people who come to Orient are looking for that sort of thing,” Markarian said. She added that her passion for these properties stems from her role as a preservationist. “They do have a following; you either get them or you don’t.”

Markarian mentioned that there have not been many owners of The Petty Homestead. The current seller has resided in the home for nearly 30 years. This stability contributes to the property’s charm and historical integrity.

The property is located within the Oysterponds Union Free School District and offers prospective buyers a unique combination of historical significance and modern living possibilities. Its exceptional condition and storied past may appeal to those interested in fostering a connection with history.
