ADELAIDE, Australia — Hollow Knight fans were sent into a frenzy last week after cryptic social media activity from Team Cherry co-director William Pellen sparked speculation about the long-awaited sequel, Silksong. The mystery began on January 15 when Pellen changed his X/Twitter profile picture to a chocolate cake and tweeted, “something big is coming. keep your eyes closed tomorrow.”

The tweet coincided with rumors of a Nintendo Switch 2 reveal on January 16, leading fans to theorize a connection. Further investigation revealed that the cake image matched a recipe for Brooklyn Blackout Cake published on April 2, 2024, fueling speculation about a potential April 2, 2025, release date for Silksong on the next-gen console.

Pellen’s new X/Twitter handle, @everydruidwaswr, and username, “little bomey,” added to the intrigue. Fans speculated that the handle might reference the Druid of the Moss Temple NPC from Silksong, while “little bomey” appeared to nod to a Southern Australian wine, a nod to Team Cherry’s Adelaide base.

However, the alternate reality game (ARG) theory was quickly debunked. Hollow Knight YouTuber fireb0rn revealed that Team Cherry’s marketing and publishing chief, Matthew ‘Leth‘ Griffin, confirmed the social media changes were a “nothingburger.” Griffin later tweeted, “It wasn’t [an ARG]. But it was still some impressive sleuthing skills by the fans… like ya’ll are WAY beyond those 2020 riddles now.”

Despite the false alarm, Griffin reassured fans that Silksong is still in development. “Yes the game is real, progressing and will release,” he tweeted. The sequel, first announced in 2019, has been highly anticipated since the original Hollow Knight’s 2017 release, which garnered acclaim for its visuals, atmosphere, and gameplay.

Team Cherry initially confirmed Silksong for Windows, Mac, Linux, and Nintendo Switch, but no updates have been provided since. With Pellen’s tweet still live and no further explanation from the developer, fans remain hopeful for a release date announcement in the coming months.
