Honduras Prepares for Crucial Match Against French Guiana in Concacaf Nations League
The Honduran national football team is set to face French Guiana on Thursday, October 9, 2024, at the Municipal Omnisport stadium in Sinnamary, as part of the Concacaf Nations League. This encounter marks the third matchday in Group B, where Honduras aims to secure three crucial points to ease their path towards the quarter-final stage.
Under the guidance of Colombian coach Reinaldo Rueda, Honduras launched their campaign in September with a commanding 4-0 victory over Trinidad and Tobago in Tegucigalpa. However, they stumbled in their subsequent match against Jamaica, succumbing to a 1-2 defeat. Currently, Jamaica and Nicaragua lead the group with four points each, placing Honduras in third with three points. Cuba follows with two points, while French Guiana and Trinidad and Tobago trail with just one point each.
Ahead of this fixture, Honduras faces some challenges, notably the absence of key players due to injuries. Midfielder David Ruiz from Inter Miami and forward Michael Chirinos are set to miss the match, which requires tactical adjustments from coach Rueda. Despite these setbacks, Rueda remains optimistic about his team’s capability and determination to secure a victory.
Historically, the last clash between Honduras and French Guiana took place during the 2017 Gold Cup, where the match ended goalless but was awarded to Honduras with a 3-0 scoreline following a player eligibility issue on the part of French Guiana. This time, Honduras hopes to clinch the win on the field and advance their position in the group standings.
The match, scheduled to kick-off at 1:30 PM Honduran time, will be broadcasted live on Tigo Sports. Looking ahead, Honduras must swiftly shift focus post-match as they are slated to face Jamaica once more in Kingston on October 14, at 7:00 PM Honduran time. Coach Rueda has been clear about his ambition to gather six points from these upcoming away matches to pave the way to the quarter-finals.
French Guiana, alongside Surinam and Guyana, although geographically located in South America, participate in the Concacaf rather than the CONMEBOL due to historical and cultural factors, including their colonial past. Unlike member nations of FIFA, French Guiana’s team competes under the Ligue de Football de la Guyane Française as an associate member of Concacaf, restricting them from FIFA World Cup participation.
