House of the Dragon Star Milly Alcock to Play Supergirl in Woman of Tomorrow
Actress Milly Alcock, known for her role in HBO’s House of the Dragon, is set to take on the iconic character of Supergirl in the upcoming film Woman of Tomorrow, as confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter. Alcock, who mesmerized audiences with her portrayal of a young Rhaenyra Targaryen, screen-tested for director James Gunn and producer Peter Safran last week, alongside actress Meg Donnelly.
While it is uncertain which project will feature Supergirl prior to her solo adventure, speculations point towards James Gunn’s Superman: Legacy, slated to begin filming this spring. However, no official confirmation has been made. The script for Woman of Tomorrow is being penned by Ana Nogueira.
Milly Alcock’s breakthrough role in House of the Dragon has earned her critical acclaim, showcasing her versatility as an actress. Now, she ventures into the world of comic book adaptations with Woman of Tomorrow, which draws inspiration from the Tom King and Bilquis Evely miniseries of the same name.
Director James Gunn expressed his excitement about casting Milly Alcock, stating, ‘Milly is a fantastically talented young actor, and I’m incredibly excited about her being a part of the DCU. She perfectly embodies the vision of Supergirl envisioned by the comic book creatives and screenwriter Ana Nogueira.’
According to Gunn and Safran, Woman of Tomorrow will present Supergirl in a new light, differentiating her from the hopeful and optimistic Superman. The film will explore Supergirl’s traumatic upbringing on the doomed planet of Krypton and her subsequent arrival on Earth. This contrasts with Superman, who was raised by loving parents from infancy.
Supergirl, also known as Kara Zor-El, is a character that dates back to Action Comics No. 252 in the comic books. As for her on-screen appearances, Faye Dunaway starred in the 1984 Supergirl film, and Melissa Benoist portrayed the hero in the CW series for six seasons. Sasha Calle will also play the character in the upcoming film The Flash.
Woman of Tomorrow is part of Chapter 1 in the DC Universe slate from James Gunn and Peter Safran, which also includes The Brave and the Bold Batman feature and a TV series starring Viola Davis reprising her Suicide Squad character Amanda Waller. Milly Alcock is represented by CAA, Entertainment 360, Curtis Brown Group, and Goodman Genow.
