Hulu’s ‘La Máquina’: A Groundbreaking Spanish-Language Series on Boxing and Friendship
Hulu has launched its first Spanish-language-produced original series, titled ‘La Máquina,’ starring renowned actors Diego Luna and Gael García Bernal. This series delves into the world of boxing, exploring themes of friendship, the sociopolitical forces outside the ring, and the complexities of saying goodbye to success.
The story follows Esteban “La Máquina” Osuna, played by García Bernal, a boxer known as “The Machine,” and his best friend and manager Andy Luján, portrayed by Diego Luna. The series also features Eiza González as Irasema, a journalist investigating the boxing underworld and Osuna’s ex-wife.
The idea for ‘La Máquina’ was conceived over a decade ago by Luna and García Bernal, who are not only stars but also executive producers of the show. The series is a reflection of their shared appreciation for boxing and its rich history in Mexico. García Bernal has been a boxing fan since his youth and even trained professionally, while Luna produced a documentary on the legendary Mexican boxer Julio César Chávez in 2007.
‘La Máquina’ makes history as Hulu’s first Spanish-language original series, showcasing diversity in language and culture. The show includes characters from various backgrounds, such as Cuban and Filipino, and features Latin American music spanning multiple decades and genres. The production was intentionally set in Mexico City to highlight the city’s heterogeneous mix of stories from around the world.
The series is a product of the production house co-founded by Luna and García Bernal, “La Corriente del Golfo,” which aims to bring warmth and diverse stories to a global audience. The show’s mission is to highlight the interconnectivity of human experiences and the planet).
