Hulu Unveils Cast for ‘The Testaments’, Sequel to ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’

LOS ANGELES, April 1, 2025 — Hulu has officially ordered a sequel series titled ‘The Testaments,’ based on Margaret Atwood‘s 2019 novel. Production is set to begin in Toronto on April 7, a day before the sixth and final season of ‘The Handmaid's Tale‘ premieres on April 8.
The new series will continue exploring the dystopian world of Gilead, focusing on a new generation of women grappling with the harsh realities of a society that has long upheld strict patriarchal values. ‘The Testaments’ is set 15 years after the events of ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ and will feature three central characters: Aunt Lydia, Agnes, and Daisy.
Joining the cast are Amy Seimetz as Paula, the formidable stepmother of Agnes, along with Brad Alexander as Garth, a young Commander involved in the lives of the girls under his protection, and Mabel Li as Aunt Vidala, the stern heir-apparent to Gilead’s women’s sphere. Additional new cast members include Zarrin Darnell-Martin as Aunt Gabbana, Eva Foote as Aunt Estee, Isolde Ardies as Hulda, Shechinah Mpumlwana as Jehosheba, Birva Pandya as Miriam, and Kira Guloien as Rosa.
Chase Infiniti, Lucy Halliday, and Ann Dowd will reprise their roles from ‘The Handmaid’s Tale,’ portraying Agnes, Daisy, and Aunt Lydia, respectively. Dowd expressed her excitement about returning to a character she finds increasingly complex, especially with the evolving narrative in ‘The Testaments’.
As described in Hulu’s official statement, ‘For these young women, growing up in Gilead is all they have ever known, having no tangible memories of the outside world prior to their indoctrination into this life. Facing the prospect of being married off and living a life of servitude, they will be forced to search for allies, both new and old, to help in their fight for freedom and the life they deserve.’ This premise promises an intimate look into their struggles and resistance.
‘The Testaments’ is developed by Bruce Miller, who also served as showrunner for ‘The Handmaid’s Tale.’ Miller will executive produce the new series alongside Warren Littlefield, Elisabeth Moss, and several others, including Mike Barker, who will direct the first three episodes.
As fans gear up for the conclusion of ‘The Handmaid’s Tale,’ the arrival of ‘The Testaments’ offers a glimpse into how future generations adapt to and resist oppressive regimes. Given the popularity of its predecessor, the new series is highly anticipated, although a release date has not yet been announced.
