Hunter Schafer Opens Up About Her Split From Dominic Fike

It’s been a year since Hunter Schafer and Dominic Fike called it quits, and the actress is still navigating the emotional waves from their brief relationship. On a recent episode of the podcast ‘Call Her Daddy,’ the 25-year-old star opened up about how getting cheated on for the first time deeply affected her.

Schafer shared that despite the breakup being amicable, the experience left her feeling ‘fundamentally changed.’ She mentioned, ‘Cheating has nothing to do with you at all; it has everything to do with that person and whatever kind of pain they’re in.’ It was a hard lesson to learn, as she had to confront her feelings about trust and betrayal.

Looking back, she said that their relationship was her first venture into monogamy and the first time she dated a cisgender man. She explained that most of her past experiences were in polyamorous and queer relationships, making this one feel even more intense. ‘Most, if not all of my deeply painful experiences I’ve had in life have been with men,’ Schafer noted, revealing some of her hesitations rooted in her past.

Going deeper into her feelings, Schafer reminisced about the unique public dynamic of their romance. ‘This is a straight guy who is in the music scene, dating a trans woman,’ she said, highlighting how special it felt to have that visibility. Despite the challenges, she appreciated how Fike was unbothered by outside judgment—they were happy together, even under scrutiny.

However, that happiness took a hit when Schafer discovered the cheating incident by going through Fike’s phone. ‘Part of why the relationship ended is because I got cheated on for the first time,’ she explained. This revelation was particularly painful as she had not only fallen for Fike’s charisma but also connected with him on a deeper level.

Despite the tough ending, Schafer emphasized that they ended things on good terms. ‘It was a mutually agreed upon thing,’ she said, adding, ‘We both recognized that this is not working, and we can’t do this.’ It was a heart-wrenching but respectful decision, showing that they truly cared for each other. Schafer commended Fike, saying he was the first person she publicly dated who saw her for who she really is.
