Iconic Online Radio Station East Village Radio Set to Relaunch with New Vision
Iconic online radio station East Village Radio, known for its unique streetfront location in New York‘s East Village, is gearing up for a relaunch next month.
The station, situated at the front of a restaurant on First Avenue, where passersby could intimately connect with the DJs, is poised to make a grand comeback with a fresh vision. Over the years, East Village Radio has welcomed a multitude of artists, including the likes of Amy Winehouse, Duran Duran, members of the New York Dolls, and the Smiths, establishing itself as a neighborhood institution.
Owner Frank Prisinzano, in collaboration with seasoned program director Brian Turner, formerly of the iconic WFMU station, is spearheading this revival.
In a nod to its anti-corporate radio stance, East Village Radio remains steadfast in its commitment to cultivating a platform for independent-minded DJs and programmers, devoid of dictated playlists. The station’s hosts bring a diverse and profound understanding of their craft, mirroring the fusion of cultures and revolutionary ideologies that have defined NYC’s East Village.
The impending relaunch marks a return to the roots of freeform radio, drawing inspiration from the rich history of FM stations and carrying forward the mission of truly independent broadcasters in the modern era.

Originating in 2003, East Village Radio initially broadcasted on a low-power transmitter at 88.1 FM, a move that eventually shifted online due to FCC regulations. Notable for its array of guests and guest DJs, including Mark Ronson’s ‘Authentic Shit’ show that featured rare music and demos, the station quickly became a beloved fixture.
Looking ahead, Prisinzano expresses his intention to relaunch the station with sponsorships, learning from past hurdles and implementing innovative solutions. The anticipated return in April 2024 is expected to feature collaborations with Clash Music, a London-based platform.
