Icy Road Conditions Reported in Houston Area, Caution Urged for Drivers

HOUSTON – Freezing temperatures and precipitation have caused icy road conditions in the Houston area and Southeast Texas. Drivers are being urged to exercise extreme caution as several crashes have already been reported. The first areas to freeze are bridges and elevated roadways, which should be approached with particular care. Houston Transtar, the local transportation agency, has provided an extensive list of locations reporting icy road conditions.

Some of the affected highways include IH-45 North, Beltway 8-North, Hardy Toll Road, West Sam Houston Tollway, and US-290 Northwest. Additionally, entrances and exits, as well as mainlanes, on highways like Westpark Tollway and SH-99 Lanier Pkwy, are reporting icy conditions.

Local authorities have announced temporary closures on several highways to minimize the risk of accidents. These closures include portions of US-290 Northwest, SH-99 Lanier Pkwy, FM-1960, and Beltway 8-North. Drivers are advised to plan their routes accordingly and adhere to the road closure signs for their safety.

It is important for drivers to remember that icy road conditions can make it difficult to control their vehicles. Slower speeds, increased following distances, and gentle braking are essential to avoid skidding or sliding on the ice. Motorists should also be aware of black ice, which can be particularly treacherous as it is difficult to see. Exercise caution when driving over shaded or less-traveled areas, as black ice may be present.
