Iga Świątek Faces Crucial Match at 2024 WTA Finals After Recent Setback
Iga Świątek, the defending champion of the WTA Finals, is facing a critical juncture in her campaign at the 2024 tournament in Riyadh. Following a surprising loss to Coco Gauff on Tuesday, Świątek’s title defense and her chances of advancing to the semifinals are under significant threat. Gauff’s victory over Świątek, which was only the second time in 13 career meetings, guaranteed Gauff a spot in the semifinals and also ensured that Aryna Sabalenka will finish the calendar year as World No. 1.
Świątek’s loss to Gauff meant she cannot finish the season as World No. 1, a position she has held for a total of 125 weeks in her career. Her next match against Daria Kasatkina, who is stepping in for the injured Jessica Pegula, is crucial. Kasatkina replaced Pegula after the American withdrew from the competition due to a left knee injury.
According to predictions, Świątek has an 86% chance of winning against Kasatkina, with an 80% chance of taking the first set. This match is scheduled to start on Thursday at 7:30 AM ET and will be a decisive factor in determining the final semifinal spots.
Despite the recent setback, Świątek has a strong track record, having won five major singles titles, including four French Open titles and one US Open title. She is also the first Polish tennis player to win an Olympic medal, earning bronze in singles at the Paris Summer Olympics in 2024.
The outcome of Świątek’s match against Kasatkina will determine whether she advances to the semifinals or exits the tournament. With her title defense hanging in the balance, Świątek will need to regain her form to stay in contention.
