Champaign, Illinois — College football fans are gearing up for a significant matchup on Saturday as No. 23 Illinois (3-1, 0-1 Big Ten) takes on No. 21 USC (4-0, 2-0 Big Ten). This top 25 clash is crucial for both teams, as each vies for recognition in the college football landscape.

For USC head coach Lincoln Riley, the game represents a chance to showcase his team’s strength, especially after the departure of former star quarterback Caleb Williams. Meanwhile, Illinois head coach Bret Bielema sees this game as vital for determining if his Fighting Illini are serious contenders for the college football playoffs.

A key concern for Illinois fans is quarterback Luke Altmyer. He is a redshirt senior who has thrown for 4,884 yards and 41 touchdowns since last season, helping his team achieve a record of 16-7. Altmyer’s impressive stats include a 70% completion rate with nine touchdowns and no interceptions this season. However, analysts like Josh Pate have voiced concerns about his performance against top teams.

“Here’s what concerns me… Luke Altmyer’s performance against better teams—it just doesn’t scale,” Pate said, expressing doubt about the Illini’s prospects against formidable opponents.

While Altmyer ranks 15th nationally in passing efficiency, Illinois has struggled to create explosive plays, sitting at 57th in the FBS. The Illini have completed only 15 passes of 15 yards or more this season. In contrast, USC’s defense has allowed several big plays, yet they have made critical takeaways that can alter the game’s momentum.

On the other side, USC’s Jayden Maiava has emerged as a quarterback who fits Riley’s offensive system seamlessly. With 1,223 passing yards and nine touchdowns without any interceptions, Maiava presents a significant challenge for Illinois. Pate believes that Maiava is even a better fit for USC than Williams was.

USC’s balanced offense features a strong backfield tandem in Waymond Jordan and Eli Sanders, complicating the challenge for the Illinois defense. Despite allowing 312 rushing yards last week against Indiana, the Illini still maintain a solid defensive front that could pose problems for the Trojans.

Ultimately, this game is pivotal for both programs. It tests Illinois’ readiness to compete among the Big Ten elite and whether Altmyer can change perceptions about his capabilities as a quarterback.
