Infosys Co Founder Narayana Murthy Gifts Grandson ₹240 Crore Shares

Infosys co-founder NR Narayana Murthy has given his four-month-old grandson Ekagrah Rohan Murthy shares of the company worth ₹240 crore, potentially making him one of India‘s youngest millionaires. The exchange filing shows that Ekagrah now holds 1,500,000 shares, equivalent to a 0.04% stake in Infosys, the nation’s second-largest IT firm. The filing revealed the transfer of shares took place ‘off-market.’

Narayana Murthy’s own stake has been decreased from 0.40% to 0.36% following the shares’ transfer. Infosys shareholders reacted negatively to the news, with shares closing at ₹1,601.80 on the National Stock Exchange, declining by 2% from the previous day. The gifting to the grandson was conducted ceremonially in November 2023 by Rohan Murthy and his wife Aparna Krishnan, following the birth of Ekagrah Rohan Murthy, whose name signifies unwavering focus and determination as per Sanskrit tradition.

Infosys meanwhile is also interlaced with high-level public figures—minister in Britain’s government and daughter of Narayana Murthy, Akshata Murty, and Prime Minister of UK, Rishi Sunak, who have two granddaughters from their union. Sudha Murty, Narayana Murthy’s wife, recently took an oath as a member of the Rajya Sabha on March 14, nominated by the President of India, highlighting her commitment to individuals from the arts, literature, science, and social service sectors.
