IRS Reports Increased Tax Returns and Refunds for 2025 Season
Washington, D.C. — Following the Oct. 15 deadline for extension filers, the IRS released updated statistics for the 2025 tax season last week. The report indicates a slight increase in the total number of tax returns received and the average tax refund amount compared to mid-October 2024.
As of Oct. 17, the IRS has issued a total of 102,122,000 refunds, which is a 1% decrease from the 103,185,000 refunds issued by the same date last year. More than 102 million Americans have already received their tax refunds, with the average refund amount now at $3,052—a 1.6% increase from the $3,004 average refund seen at this time in 2024.
The total refund amount issued stands at $311.6 billion, marking a 0.6% increase from $309.9 billion reported in mid-October of the previous year. The average direct deposit refund for the 2025 tax season is $3,151, which is a 1.9% rise compared to last year.
Additionally, the IRS has received 163,594,000 tax returns as of Oct. 17, reflecting a 1.3% increase over the 161,489,000 returns processed by the same time last year. This data highlights the ongoing compliance of taxpayers during the current filing season.
Experts suggest that the increase in refunds may signal a positive financial outlook for many taxpayers. However, the IRS continues to work through a substantial volume of returns, ensuring timely refunds for filers as they navigate their tax obligations.
