Isabella Rossellini Earns First Oscar Nomination, Joining Mother Ingrid Bergman in History
LOS ANGELES, Calif. — Isabella Rossellini, the daughter of Hollywood legends Ingrid Bergman and Roberto Rossellini, earned her first Oscar nomination on Thursday for her supporting role as a Vatican nun in the papal thriller “Conclave.” The nomination marks a historic moment for the 72-year-old actress, who joins her mother as one of the few mother-daughter duos to receive Academy Award recognition.
Rossellini’s nomination comes 50 years after her mother, Ingrid Bergman, won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her role in “Murder on the Orient Express.” Bergman, a three-time Oscar winner, is celebrated as one of cinema’s greatest icons, known for her performances in classics like “Casablanca” and “Notorious.” Rossellini’s father, Italian filmmaker Roberto Rossellini, was also nominated for an Oscar in 1950 for his screenplay for “Paisan.”
“It’s an incredible honor to be recognized by the Academy, especially in a year that holds such personal significance,” Rossellini said in a statement. “My mother’s legacy has always been a source of inspiration, and to follow in her footsteps is truly humbling.”
Rossellini’s career spans four decades, beginning with her breakout role in David Lynch‘s “Blue Velvet” in 1986. She has since become a staple of independent cinema, collaborating frequently with Canadian director Guy Maddin. Her filmography includes notable roles in “Fearless,” “Two Lovers,” and “Big Night,” as well as television appearances in “30 Rock” and “Chicago Hope,” the latter earning her an Emmy nomination in 1997.
This year’s nomination places Rossellini among a select group of mother-daughter Oscar nominees, including Judy Garland and Liza Minnelli, Diane Ladd and Laura Dern, Goldie Hawn and Kate Hudson, and Janet Leigh and Jamie Lee Curtis. Brazilian actress Fernanda Torres also joins the list, nominated 26 years after her mother, Fernanda Montenegro, for her role in “I'm Still Here.”
Rossellini faces stiff competition in the Best Supporting Actress category, with nominees including Monica Barbaro, Ariana Grande, Felicity Jones, and Zoe Saldaña. The 97th Academy Awards will take place on March 2, 2025, at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.
