Issa Rae Tests Live Show in Houston, Teases Future Plans
HOUSTON, Texas — Actress and producer Issa Rae captivated a sold-out crowd at the Hobby Center for the Performing Arts on Saturday, January 18, during “An Evening with Issa Rae.” The event, part of a test run for a potential live show, featured candid conversations, audience interaction, and a celebration of Rae’s multifaceted career.
Rae, best known for creating and starring in the HBO series “Insecure,” was in Houston to promote her latest projects, including the buddy comedy “One of Them Days,” which she produced and stars in alongside Keke Palmer and SZA. The evening also highlighted her sparkling white wine, Viarae, which was served to attendees in the theater lobby.
After an hour of music curated by local DJ CeeWatts, Rae took the stage to thunderous applause. She engaged in a lively conversation with 97.9 The Box radio personality Keyshia Nicole, touching on topics ranging from the possibility of an “Insecure” movie to her experiences in the entertainment industry. “I love that y’all love it, but I feel the story has been told,” Rae said about the potential film, eliciting groans from the audience.
The event also included an audience Q&A, where one attendee shouted a request for acting opportunities. Rae responded with a laugh, “I’m not doing any shows right now.” The night concluded with a trivia game featuring Houston-based actors DomiNque Perry and Kendrick Sampson, both of whom appeared in “Insecure.” The trio led the crowd in a sing-along of Z-Ro’s “Mo City Don,” further energizing the already hyped audience.
Backstage, Rae revealed that the Houston event was a trial for a live show she’s developing. “This is still kind of an experimental show, like figuring out what it is,” she told reporters. “I’m just grateful that people want to come and see what it is, and it’s something that we’re shaping. We’re doing another one in D.C.”
Rae praised the Houston crowd, calling them “amazing” and noting their enthusiasm. “I could feel the love and the energy and the excitement,” she said. “It was just a privilege to be in front of them.”
The evening showcased Rae’s ability to connect with her audience, blending humor, music, and personal anecdotes into a unique live experience. With plans for future events, Rae continues to expand her influence beyond television and film, solidifying her status as a dynamic force in entertainment.
