Italian authorities are on high alert as two of the country’s renowned volcanoes, Mt Etna and Stromboli, erupted on Friday, unleashing a spectacle of hot ash and lava over Italy‘s picturesque landscapes. The fiery eruptions forced a sudden closure at Catania Airport in Sicily, disrupting air travel operations for a brief period.

Situated on the eastern coast of Sicily, Mt Etna, known for its fiery nature, exhibited intense activity in recent days, spewing molten lava and ash into the skies. Meanwhile, on the northern coast of Sicily, Stromboli sent streams of lava cascading into the sea, painting a mesmerizing, albeit dangerous, natural display.

Responding to the eruption, Italy’s Civil Protection Agency issued a red alert specifically for Stromboli, warning of potential escalation in volcanic activity. Civil Protection Minister Nello Musumeci emphasized the critical importance of monitoring Stromboli closely and ensuring evacuation plans are in place should the situation worsen.

Preemptively strenghtening their resources, the fire brigade has deployed additional firefighters on the island to bolster readiness for any emergencies that may arise from the ongoing volcanic eruptions. Residents and authorities in Catania swiftly moved to clear streets and vehicles buried under a layer of dark volcanic ash left behind by the eruptions.

In a bid to resume normal operations, representatives for Catania Airport announced that flight services are expected to recommence by 3pm local time, assuring travelers of a return to routine after the temporary disruption caused by the volcanic events.
