Jackie Chan Discusses Legacy and New Karate Kid Film

Beverly Hills, California – Jackie Chan, the legendary actor and martial artist, brought his signature energy to a recent cover shoot at the Waldorf Astoria Beverly Hills. The 71-year-old star, known for his playful antics and impressive stunts, is gearing up for the summer release of his latest film, The Karate Kid: Legends, where he reprises his role as Mr. Han.
Chan’s enthusiasm for the project is palpable. ‘I was for sure super excited. It’s been almost 15 years!’ he said, reflecting on the gap since his last appearance in the iconic role. This new film, unlike its predecessor set in China, takes Mr. Han to New York City, where he encounters Daniel LaRusso, played by Ralph Macchio.
In this sixth installment of the franchise, the storyline picks up after the conclusion of the popular series Cobra Kai, introducing a new protégé, Li Fong, played by Ben Wang. Li, a kung fu prodigy from Beijing, arrives in the Big Apple following a family tragedy and eventually finds himself in a karate competition.
Chan notes the unique collaboration between Mr. Han and LaRusso as they teach Li, blending their different martial arts philosophies. ‘We work together easily, and since our families know each other from long before, it makes everything even easier,’ Chan explained.
The intensity of the film builds to a breathtaking rooftop showdown, showcasing Li’s journey and growth as a martial artist. Chan promises fans will witness not only exhilarating action but also themes of friendship and dedication. ‘When people hold hands and work together, there’s a miracle,’ he stated.
Chan’s philosophy of action filmmaking is shaped by his own experiences. ‘Of course, I always do my own stunts. It’s who I am. That’s not changing until the day I retire, which is never!’ he joked.
Beyond his film career, Chan dedicates himself to philanthropy, focusing on education and wildlife conservation. He established the Jackie Chan Charitable Foundation to aid those in need, illustrating a commitment to giving back. ‘I didn’t go to school. That’s why I always tell young people, ‘Study hard. Learn as much as you can,’’ he emphasized.
As he reflects on his legacy, Chan’s focus lies on inspiring the next generation. ‘My movies will last forever, because in them, I never age. I hope people will watch and just learn one thing: be a good person,’ he concluded. With a smile, he added, ‘I’m still on the road,’ hinting at new adventures ahead.
