Jai Courtney Hints at Possible Return as Captain Boomerang

CANNES, France — Actor Jai Courtney hinted at a potential return to his role as Captain Boomerang during a recent interview at the Cannes Film Festival. Courtney, known for his roles in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU), first portrayed Digger Harkness in 2016’s Suicide Squad and reprised the role in 2021’s The Suicide Squad.

In the latter film, Captain Boomerang faced a grisly fate, getting hit by helicopter debris before being crushed. Many believed this marked the end of his character. Despite this, Courtney expressed optimism during his talk with filmmaker James Gunn, who is now co-CEO of DC Studios.

“I have hope,” Courtney said. “Somewhere in the back of my mind, there’s a prayer that we’ll see more of Boomerang one day.” He noted that Gunn suggested that just because a character dies doesn’t mean the end is final.

Gunn’s approach to storytelling within the DCEU raises intriguing possibilities. Now overseeing the development of a new DC Universe (DCU), Gunn hinted that the canon is flexible, allowing for characters to return even if they met their end. Courtney mused about potential scenarios, including flashbacks or even a retcon that could bring Boomerang back.

“You know these rules don’t really apply,” Courtney recalled Gunn saying, which left the door open for Boomerang’s return. “Just because he dies here doesn’t mean it’s gone forever, right?”

Under Gunn’s new direction, some DCEU characters may crossover into the DCU. Fans are eager to see which characters, like Amanda Waller and John Cena’s Peacemaker, will persist as the franchise reboots. As for Captain Boomerang, the final decision remains uncertain.

The upcoming DCEU projects, which include Creature Commandos and Superman, will officially launch the new continuity. Gunn has emphasized that nothing is canon until these projects introduce a new framework for storytelling.

As both projects develop, fans will be watching closely to see if Jai Courtney will unleash those iconic boomerangs once more. Only time will tell if his hopes as Digger Harkness will come true.
