James Bond Franchise Changes Hands Amid Amazon Takeover

LOS ANGELES, CA — The long-standing James Bond franchise is set for a major change of direction as Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli have handed over creative control to Amazon MGM Studios, the companies announced on February 20, 2025.
The newly formed joint venture enables Amazon MGM to assume full creative autonomy over the iconic 007 brand while co-owning its intellectual property rights alongside Wilson and Broccoli. This represents a pivotal shift in the franchise’s management, which has traditionally remained within the Broccoli family for over 60 years.
Amazon’s acquisition of MGM Studios in 2022 for $8.45 billion was largely motivated by the desire to control one of cinema’s richest franchises, which has generated over $7 billion at the box office since the release of “Dr. No” in 1962. Mike Hopkins, the head of Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios, expressed gratitude towards the Broccoli legacy, stating, “We are honored to continue this treasured heritage and look forward to ushering in the next phase of the legendary 007.”
Broccoli and Wilson, who have been the guardians of Bond’s cinematic legacy since their father, Albert “Cubby” Broccoli, established the franchise, confirmed in their statements that they will retain involvement in the franchise but will step back from daily creative oversight. Wilson commented, “With my 007 career spanning nearly 60 incredible years, it is time for our trusted partner, Amazon MGM Studios, to lead James Bond into the future.”
Under the new arrangement, it remains unclear how future James Bond films will unfold or whether the franchise will expand into television or streaming content. This uncertainty has raised concerns among fans about creative integrity and the authenticity of the Bond character. The recent statement by an Amazon employee expressing doubts about Bond’s heroism has further intensified these debates.
