James P. Gorman to Become Chairman of Disney’s Board as He Prepares to Step Down from Morgan Stanley
James P. Gorman, the current Executive Chairman of Morgan Stanley, has been named the upcoming Chairman of the Board of The Walt Disney Company. This announcement comes as Gorman prepares to step down from his role at Morgan Stanley at the end of 2024.
Gorman has had a distinguished career in finance, serving as the CEO of Morgan Stanley from 2010 to 2023 and as the firm’s executive chairman since 2012. He played a crucial role in the merger and integration of Morgan Stanley’s wealth management business with Citi’s Smith Barney, creating one of the largest wealth management platforms globally.
At Disney, Gorman will succeed the current board chair, with the transition expected to take place next year. This move is part of Disney’s broader leadership changes, as the company also plans to announce Bob Iger‘s successor as CEO in early 2026.
Outside of his roles at Morgan Stanley and Disney, Gorman serves on several other boards, including the Council on Foreign Relations and the Columbia Business School. He is also a dual citizen of Australia and the United States, having passed the US citizenship test in 2004.
Gorman’s appointment to the Disney board reflects his extensive experience in leadership and strategic planning, which will be invaluable as Disney navigates its future growth and challenges.
