LOS ANGELES, CA — James Gunn, the filmmaker known for directing the “Guardians of the Galaxy” trilogy, expressed his views on the current state of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) during a recent interview. Gunn, now Co-Chairman and CEO of DC Studios, stated that the pressure for increased content on Disney+ contributed significantly to the fatigue surrounding the MCU franchise.

“That wasn’t fair. It wasn’t right,” Gunn remarked about Disney’s demands for more Marvel projects. He believes that this push for quantity over quality led to a dilution of the franchise, resulting in a poor reception among audiences. According to Gunn, the approach at DC Studios will be markedly different, focusing on quality narratives.

Gunn emphasized, “We don’t have the mandate [at DC] to have a certain amount of movies and TV shows every year. So we’re going to put out everything that we think is of the highest quality.” He assured that nothing will enter production without a completed screenplay that meets his satisfaction.

The director is currently overseeing multiple projects, with a particular focus on the upcoming sequel to “The Batman,” which is in the works. “Batman’s my biggest issue in all of DC right now, personally,” he said. “I am working with the writer of Batman and trying to get it right.” He acknowledged the immense popularity of Batman while also noting the challenge of keeping the character fresh for audiences.

Gunn also voiced concerns about the broader film industry, stating that many movies are rushing into production without finished scripts, which he believes is a primary reason for the current decline in cinema attendance. “The movie industry is dying not because of a lack of interest in movies, but because of poor planning in production,” he explained.

As the new head of DC Studios, Gunn’s priorities include finalizing scripts for both Batman and Wonder Woman, aiming to deliver high-quality films that resonate with fans.
