James Gunn, the visionary behind Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, is now steering the ship for DC’s new cinematic universe, dubbed “Chapter One: Gods and Monsters.” Alongside producer Peter Safran, Gunn has unveiled ambitious plans for this fresh phase, starting with the animated series Creature Commandos. This show, already renewed for a second season, is the official starting point for the new DC Universe (DCU).

Creature Commandos, which first appeared in DC Comics’ Weird War Tales #93 in 1980, has been reimagined by Gunn. The original team, confined to World War II, included a werewolf, a gorgon, a vampire, and a Frankenstein-like creature. Gunn’s version introduces new characters like the Bride of Frankenstein and Nina Mazursky, adding depth and intrigue to the lineup.

Unlike the 2016 Suicide Squad movie, which struggled with character development, Creature Commandos takes its time to flesh out the backstories of its tragic troupe across seven episodes. The show has been praised for its heart and humor, with characters like the Bride, voiced by Indira Varma, standing out as potential new fan favorites.

Despite the mixed reception of Gunn’s 2021 The Suicide Squad, Creature Commandos has been a hit, proving that Gunn’s approach to lesser-known characters can resonate with audiences. The show’s success has sparked speculation about a potential live-action adaptation, with David Harbour, who voices Eric Frankenstein, expressing enthusiasm for the idea.

The finale of Creature Commandos set up an even larger team, hinting at future storylines that could include characters like Nosferata and Khalis the mummy. With a fire-breathing kaiju appearing in the Superman trailer, it’s clear that Gunn is embracing the wacky and wonderful aspects of DC Comics.

As the DCU takes shape, Creature Commandos stands as a testament to Gunn’s ability to breathe new life into obscure characters. With more projects yet to be revealed for “Chapter One: Gods and Monsters,” fans can look forward to a kooky cavalcade of critters joining the DCU in the future.
