NEW YORK (AP) — James Taylor, the iconic singer-songwriter, is set to join the ranks of musical legends with the announcement of a new stage musical titled “Fire & Rain.” The project was revealed Monday and will showcase Taylor’s timeless songs, including his classic hit that shares its name with the title.

The musical is being developed with a story by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright and actor Tracy Letts, and it will be directed by Tony Award winner David Cromer. “Fire and Rain,” originally released in 1970 on Taylor’s second album, “Sweet Baby James,” soared to No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and exemplifies his poignant storytelling through music.

No specific timeline has been disclosed regarding when “Fire & Rain” will make its debut on stage. However, Taylor’s involvement marks his entry into a growing trend of musical artists transforming their song catalogs into theatrical productions.

With a career that has garnered six Grammy Awards and induction into both the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame, Taylor’s musical repertoire includes other beloved tracks like “You’ve Got a Friend” and “How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved by You).” He holds the distinguished achievement of being the first artist to have a Billboard Top 10 album in each of the last six decades.

Tracy Letts, who will provide the narrative framework for the production, is well-known for his work in theater, with notable titles such as “August: Osage County,” for which he received both a Pulitzer Prize and a Tony Award. His other acclaimed works include “Bug,” “Killer Joe,” and “Superior Donuts.” Letts and Cromer have previously collaborated on two of Letts’ plays — “Bug” and “Man From Nebraska.”

This musical venture continues the trend of musical artists integrating storytelling and their musical legacies. Taylor follows in the footsteps of various musicians who have adapted their music into stage narratives, including fellow icons like Alicia Keys, Dolly Parton, Neil Diamond, and Carole King. Each has crafted biographical musicals that illuminate their careers and personal journeys, demonstrating the timeless connection between music and theater.

As “Fire & Rain” progresses into development, anticipation continues to build among fans of Taylor and musical theater alike, as Broadway embraces a diversifying array of musical talents.
