Haut à Courroies Jane Birkin Auction

PARIS, France — A historic Hermès Haut à Courroies (HAC) bag that once belonged to muse Jane Birkin and her partner Serge Gainsbourg is set to go under the hammer in Paris this November. The bag, first gifted to Birkin by Gainsbourg, symbolizes their artistic and romantic legacy.

This particular HAC bag, known for its connection to one of pop culture’s most iconic couples, will lead Christie’s upcoming auction scheduled for November 6. The bag is part of a series of previews that will take place in Hong Kong and Bangkok from October 30 to November 6 before arriving in Paris.

The original HAC design dates back to 1892, created by Hermès to accommodate equestrian gear. Birkin was inspired to use this particular design during her travels between London and Paris with Gainsbourg, and it became her signature travel accessory. The iconic Birkin bag that followed originated from a chance encounter involving Birkin and Hermès executive Jean-Louis Dumas in the 1980s.

In July, the original Birkin bag sold for a record-breaking $10.1 million at auction, making the forthcoming sale of the HAC particularly appealing to collectors. According to fashion insiders, the HAC bag’s auction is expected to draw considerable interest due to its significance as the predecessor to the Birkin style.

As a collector’s item, the HAC bag embodies the effortless style of Birkin and the artistic rebellion represented by Gainsbourg. Their tumultuous relationship created a cultural impact that resonates even today. The couple was known for their provocative work, including the infamous 1969 song ‘Je t’aime… moi non plus,’ which stirred controversy across Europe.

This auction not only marks the sale of a unique luxury item but also reflects the intertwined history of fashion and romance. Collectors stand to gain a piece of history that represents the evolution of luxury fashion, an object rooted in both artistry and authenticity.

The global tour preceding the auction will allow enthusiasts to appreciate the bag before its final auction. The legacy of the HAC, as both a romantic gesture and a symbol of sophistication, will be highlighted throughout this event.
