Japanese Broadcaster Competes in Apex Legends Global Series Exhibition Match
SAPPORO, Japan — A local television announcer took center stage at the Apex Legends Global Series (ALGS) Year 4 Championship, competing in an exhibition match alongside top gamers and influencers at the Yamato House Prest Dome in Sapporo.
Fujisawa Tatsuya, a reporter for HTB Hokkaido News, was invited to participate in the exhibition match after organizers learned of his passion for the popular battle royale game. The event, held on February 1, 2025, featured 24 players from around the world, including Japanese celebrities and professional gamers like Kijima Asuka and Nishimura Honoka.
“I’m super nervous,” Fujisawa admitted before the match. Despite his enthusiasm, he faced challenges adapting to unfamiliar gaming equipment. The exhibition included four matches: two battle royale rounds and two team-based competitions, with points awarded for each enemy eliminated.
Fujisawa started strong, earning cheers from the crowd with his early performance. “Got one! OK!” he exclaimed during the match. However, his momentum waned in the final round, where he struggled to secure additional points. He ultimately finished in 15th place.
Despite the result, Fujisawa remained upbeat. “It was so much fun,” he said. “As a gaming enthusiast and a reporter, I hope to show through my coverage that gaming is a vibrant and exciting form of entertainment.”
The ALGS Year 4 Championship, held in Japan for the first time, drew competitors from North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific, and South America. The tournament featured a grueling schedule, with group stages, elimination rounds, and a finals match using a match-point system. Teams like AURORA, TSM, and CRAZY RACCOON dominated the leaderboard, showcasing their skills in the high-stakes competition.
The event also highlighted the growing popularity of esports in Japan, with fans gathering to watch live streams and support their favorite teams. “I want to cheer for all the teams competing on the global stage,” said one attendee, echoing the sentiment of many in the crowd.
