Tuscaloosa, AL – Jason Isbell, a six-time Grammy Award winner and acclaimed singer-songwriter, recently spoke about his upcoming performances at ShoalsFest, a music festival he founded in Florence, Alabama. In an interview with Alabama Public Radio’s Pat Duggins, Isbell reflected on his career, personal experiences, and the significance of his hometown in his music.

“I was truly honored to be included in the Walk of Honor in Florence,” Isbell said, referencing a recent ceremony where he was recognized alongside prominent figures like Spooner Oldham. Isbell noted, “It felt good to see people from my past and reunite with my hometown in a very positive way.”

As the headliner for ShoalsFest, Isbell elaborated on how performing in front of friends and family enriches his experience on stage. “It puts you in the moment, makes performances better, and makes the whole thing more enjoyable for everybody,” he explained.

The festival aims to blend local talent with national acts, showcasing a mix of great songs and performances. Isbell emphasized, “I just like great songs,” and curates the lineup based on artists’ connections to the area.

Isbell also expressed the importance of preserving the musical legacy of Alabama’s rich history. He praised influential musicians like David Hood, who mentored him early in his career. “He really went out of his way to be kind to me and very generous with his time,” Isbell recalled.

On a personal note, Isbell discussed his latest album, “Foxes in the Snow,” his first solo acoustic project. He acknowledged that creating the album was a form of therapy during difficult times. “Making that record really helped me do that,” he shared.

As for the future of ShoalsFest, Isbell remains passionate about maintaining its intimate atmosphere. “You can cruise in with a lawn chair and relax and have plenty of space,” he said, highlighting the event’s appeal as a smaller festival away from the chaos of larger events.

Isbell is expected to captivate audiences with his performances at the festival just days away, reflecting on his journey through music and his deep roots in Alabama.
